A SPECIAL DAY (1977) Italy
A Special Day is a 1977 Italian drama film directed by Ettore Scola and starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni who deliver great performances. Set in Rome on May 8, 1938, during Adolf Hitler's visit to the city, the film follows two neighbors, Antonietta, a housewife, and Gabriele, a radio broadcaster, who find themselves alone in their apartment building as everyone else has gone to attend the Hitler parade.
Over the course of the day, the two strike up an unlikely friendship and find solace in each other's company, sharing their fears, dreams, and secrets. As their bond deepens, they are forced to confront their own loneliness and isolation in a time of political turmoil and uncertainty. "A Special Day" is a powerful exploration of human connection, resilience, and hope in the face of adversity. In 2008, the film was included on the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage’s 100 Italian films to be saved, a list of 100 films that "have changed the collective memory of the country between 1942 and 1978. Following the screening there will be a film analysis and discussion with independent filmmaker and scholar Elías Nahmías who has studied and worked in every aspect of filmmaking .
