Talking Across Deep Divides: A Community Discussion Led by Martin Fletcher

  • JC3/Chesma 47 Calle De Las Moras San Miguel de Allende, Gto., 37700 Mexico (map)

Martin Fletcher will open the floor with a presentation on how journalists engage people they profoundly disagree with—and what that can (and cannot) accomplish. Groups of 3-4 will speak about the questions below for 15 minutes. The floor will then open for people to air questions, tensions, and concerns, for Martin, and others in the audience, to address.

Small-Group Community Discussion Questions

  • Why might someone choose to engage with people whose views feel upsetting or offensive?

  • What do you hope for in these conversations: persuasion, understanding, coexistence, or something else?

  • Have you found yourself narrowing or reshaping your social circle because of political or Israel-related views? Why or why not?

  • Which conversations feel hardest: friends, family, or strangers? Why?

  • How do you respond when someone dismisses facts, history, or lived experience as irrelevant or false?Come ready to ask your questions, share your qualms and air your concerns.

Martin Fletcher was NBC News Correspondent and bureau chief in Tel Aviv for close to thirty years. Anderson Cooper said of Martin: “For decades the gold standard of TV war correspondents.” He has won almost every television award, including five Emmys, a Columbia University DuPont Award, which is the TV Pulitzer, six Overseas Press Club Awards, and many more. Now he is rapidly gaining an equally impressive reputation as an author. He has written two non-fiction books, including Walking Israel, winner of the National Jewish book award, as well as four novels. The latest, “Promised Land”, was compared in multiple reviews with Exodus”. It was a Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. Martin is the only writer to be honored in both fiction and non-fiction. His book: 'TEACHERS - The Ones I Can’t Forget' was published March 28, 2023 in New York. Martin’s home is in San Miguel de Allende, which he shares with his wife, Hagar, the Israeli artist.

Please note: The JC3 welcomes divergent views. As Isaiah the prophet said, “We are a house for all peoples.” That said we do have a code of conduct and expect all who participate in discussion to follow the standards laid out in it. Please read: JC3 Code of Conduct
