2026 San Miguel PEN Presents: Who’s Really Murdering Mexican Journalists

  • JC3/Chesma 47 Calle De Las Moras San Miguel de Allende, Gto., 37700 Mexico (map)

Andrew Paxman, author of 2025 book, Mexican Watchdogs: The Rise of a Critical Press since the 1980s  presents:

Who’s Really Murdering Mexican Journalists?

Answer: It’s not the cartels or the federal government who are chiefly behind the culture of murder-with-impunity.

All over Mexico, journalists are murdered with impunity—10 in the year between the Dias des Muertos of 2024 and 2025, including two in Guanajuato. Who is responsible? Andrew Paxman, author most recently of Mexican Watchdogs: The Rise of a Critical Press since the 1980s, has a good idea—and it’s not the cartels or the federal government. Come hear Andrew discuss the role of state governors, who control state police and judiciary and who have been abusing the power of their offices and sepng the tone of impunity in their regions since the turn of the 20th century.
