Macario: A playreading

  • JC3/Chesma 47 Calle De Las Moras San Miguel de Allende, Gto., 37700 Mexico (map)

Bruno Traven was the pen name of a German-born author whose most famous novel, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, was turned into a classic film. Traven also wrote the supernatural drama Macario, the story of a Mexican woodcutter who, though starving, shares a roast turkey with a peasant woman who turns out to be Death Herself. As a reward, Death gives Macario a container of miraculous water that can restore a mortally ill person back to perfect health. The gift brings Macario fame and wealth – but not without unforeseen and dire consequences.

Macario was the hit of the Halloween / Dia de Muertos season when performed in late October at Artlalli, in Centro, and by popular demand, there will be two encore presentations at JC3/CHESMA. The play will be presented in English by some of the best Mexican actors in San Miguel, as a staged reading. This in not your standard play reading, because it is with live music! Actor/director Alan Jordan calls this production of Macario a “must-see,” and director Pedro Allende adds: “Extraordinary. A standing ovation for this magnificent cast.”
