Adapted from Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw, The Innocents is a masterclass in psychological horror, ambiguity, and atmospheric dread. Deborah Kerr stars as a governess who becomes convinced th at the estate's two young children are being haunted by malevolent spirits. But as the line between the supernatural and the psychological blurs, the film invites a chilling question: is she protecting the children --; or harming them?

Director Jack Clayton's restrained yet eerie direction, combined with Freddie Francis's haunting black - and - white cinematography, creates an atmosphere thick with repression, guilt, and suggestion. More unsettling than explicit, The Innocents is a ghost story that lingers --; an explo ration of innocence, corruption, and the terrifying spaces between belief and madness.
