Planning Ahead, With Care
Sunday, October 25 · 11:00 am · At the JC3
Every fall, San Miguel fills with marigolds and ofrendas as families welcome their departed home with music, candles and favorite foods. Jewish tradition honors the dead more quietly: a simple burial, a week of shiva, a yahrzeit candle each year, and a small stone left on the grave. Different customs, same heart. Both ask us to remember, and both are easier on our families when they know what we want. Writing it down is one of the kindest things you can do for the people you love.
This is why we’re inviting the entire Jewish community of San Miguel (members, friends and part-time residents) to a relaxed, practical conversation over coffee and brunch bites: empanadas, pan dulce and more. Dr. Daniel Lessner will explain Jewish customs for honoring the dead, and a representative from Jardines de Nueva Vida, home to Bet Chayim, our Jewish cemetery in San Miguel, will walk us through the options and answer questions. In honor of Día de Muertos, they’re offering JC3 members special pricing with flexible payment plans.
If you live here part of the year
This conversation is also important for you, if a traditional Jewish funeral matters to you, it helps to decide now whether that would happen here or back home, so your family isn’t facing that choice under pressure. Whatever you decide, we’re here to help make it happen.
Updating our records
We’re updating our files, and if you are comfortable sharing we’d like your confidential wishes on file. Paper copies of a form you can fill out will be available on Sunday.
Come with your questions, or just come to listen.
